The Jacksonville Jaguars are set to square off with Washington on Sunday afternoon as this unbelievably disappointing season nears its end. Jacksonville and Washington are remarkably on the same trajectory this season, but have gotten there in different ways. After a 3-1 start, Jacksonville imploded. After a 6-3 start, Washington lost its starting quarterback in Alex Smith to a brutal injury, and the team has now dropped four straight. The two franchises aren’t very familiar with each other, but Washington has dominated the all-time series. Let’s recap the history. He drew the start the following game against the Indianapolis Colts, but Blake Bortles made his debut and took over the reins. Back to the game at hand, though, Kirk Cousins tore up Jacksonville, completing 22 of 33 passes for 250 yards, two touchdowns and no picks. Alfred Morris added 85 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Not helping matters was the fact that the front office actually thought Toby Gerhart was an NFL-caliber running back. Washington jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, before Jacksonville scored 10 unanswered points itself. Washington got the go ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter, which David Garrard answered with a 20-yard touchdown run with 2:44 left on the clock. The Jags actually won the overtime coin toss, but Garrard threw a costly interception which was returned eight yards and gave Washington the ball at Jacksonville’s 14-yard line. After a couple of handoffs, Graham Gano kicked the game-winning field goal for them. The Jaguars lost to Rex Grossman and Jacksonville’s playoff chances took a serious hit (the team lost the next game to finish 8-8 and miss playoffs). Washington have dominated the Jaguars no matter the decade. This week’s matchup is just the seventh all-time meeting between the two franchises. Both teams are crashing and burning right now, but Washington are forced to start Josh Johnson, who was signed out of the Alliance of American Football League as a backup to Mark Sanchez, but will now play over Sanchez who struggled last week. Johnson literally had to play Madden 2019 to acquaint himself with his teammates. While the Jaguars have had many struggles, an inexperienced quarterback recently out of the NFL would probably rather not face a secondary boasting Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye. It’s not often at this point the Jaguars deserve to be big favorites in a game, but this week is one of those occurrences. So, will the Jaguars actually win a game?
