Fielder, who was diagnosed the injury last week and was placed on the disabled list last Friday, is expected to miss the rest of the season as he recovers and eventually begins rehab. The procedure on Tuesday fused the C5 and C6 discs. Acquired from the Detroit Tigers in the offseason in exchange for second baseman Ian Kinsler, Fielder last played May 16 because of the injury. The 2007 National League home run champion first had an injection in his neck in an attempt to alleviate the pain, which proved unsuccessful and led to the operation. Fielder had participated in 547 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the majors at the time, prior to sitting out the May 17 game against Toronto.
