EDTShareTweetShareShareHowie Roseman discusses Eagles’ plan to sign Carson Wentz to an extension, impact of offseason additions, and much moreBill Streicher-USA TODAY SportsHowie Roseman appeared on SportsRadio 94WIP’s Morning Show with Angelo Cataldi on Tuesday morning. The Eagles’ EVP of football operations touched on a number of topics, including some guy named Carson Wentz. Here’s a look at everything he had to say, along with some very important thoughts of my own.CARSON WENTZ’S FUTURENothing ground-breaking here. Roseman, Jeffrey Lurie, and Doug Pederson have all publicly stated the plan is to sign Wentz to a long-term contract extension. It’s a matter of “when” and not “if” for this team. The Eagles would probably love to get it done sooner than later. Wentz might be the one who is hesitant since his value isn’t at his highest after two straight injured seasons. I still feel like we could see a deal done before the season starts. SIGNING MALIK JACKSONThe Eagles were trotting out the likes of Haloti Ngata, Bruce Hector, and “T.Y. McGill” next to Fletcher Cox at times last season. Adding Jackson, who can rush the passer, is a significant upgrade. CHRIS LONG AND MORE DEFENSIVE LINE TALKAdding Jackson alone was a big deal. Getting Jernigan back — assuming he’s healthy — is even better. Is there a team with a better trio of defensive tackles than Cox, Jackson, and Jernigan? It feels like Long isn’t going to be back. Hopefully he is. I’m not optimistic.Ostman is definitely a guy to watch this summer. He drew a ton of praise from the coaching staff last year for his efforts on the practice squad. Ostman filled the old Steven Means role of preparing the offensive line for games each week by going all out in practice. Ostman actually led the NCAA in sacks prior to the Eagles signing him as an undrafted free agent last year. It’d be great if he can prove to be more than a long shot.It sounds like Roseman isn’t done adding at defensive end with that “it’s a position where we’re going to continue to look and continue to strengthen” line. Go get Ezekiel Ansah Womens Timmy Jernigan Jersey , Howard.DOES HOWIE HAVE A BIAS?For better or worse, this Eagles regime is very big on familiarity. They’ve talked about their “cohabitation matrix” before. I don’t think the Eagles retained BLG and brought Jackson and Curry back just because Roseman had a role in drafting them. These players weren’t luxury additions; they filled significant needs. DESEAN JACKSON’S RETURNThe Eagles will hope Jackson can be just as productive against other teams as he was against them in recent years. It’ll be great to see this offense have an elite deep threat once again.WHY THE EAGLES DRAFTED ANDRE DILLARDDillard has the potential to be an amazing pick for Philly. If he can be as great as advertised, the Eagles can “set it and forget it” at one of their most important positions for the next decade or so.SIGNING ZACH BROWNBrown has never been on an NFL team that’s finished with a winning record. Take a look:2012: 6-102013: 7-92014: 2-142015: 3-132016: 7-92017: 7-92018: 7-9I’m sure he wouldn’t mind breaking that trend this season.EAGLES AUTISM CHALLENGEThe Eagles raised more than $2.5 million for autism research last year. Some argue that Kaepernick should be banned from the league for [insert one of the many reasons we’ve all heard] while the others state that he has plenty left in the tank but will not be signed because of [insert one of the many reasons we’ve all heard]. The truth, as is usually the case, is somewhere in the middle. Here are the reasons Colin Kaepernick was not signed by the Philadelphia Eagles. He is too expensivePer the Associated Press, back in February when the AAF (RIP) was about to begin, “a person with knowledge of the conversation” said that Kapernick was asking for “$20 million or more to consider playing [in the AAF].” Here is a list of NFL quarterbacks who are signed to contracts worth $20 million or more, per Over The Cap (sorted by AAV):Matt RyanRussell WilsonJimmy GaroppoloMatt StaffordAaron RodgersCarson WentzDerek CarrAndrew LuckCam NewtonAndy DaltonAlex SmithNick FolesEli ManningKirk CousinsPhilip RiversBen RoethlisbergerJoe FlaccoDrew BreesKyler MurrayBaker MayfieldSam DarnoldMitchell TrubiskyJared GoffDaniel JonesJameis WinstonMarcus MariotaTom BradyJosh AllenOf these 28 players, 27 are currently the starting quarterback for their team. The outlier, Daniel Jones, is an heir apparent. There is quite simply no circumstance that would lead to the Eagles signing a backup quarterback for $20 million right now. The Eagles ultimately got Josh McCown at a fraction of this price by inking him to a contract that has a maximum payout of $5.4 million. He has not played football since January 1 Stefen Wisniewski Jersey , 2017Given that he has not played football in 2 1⁄2 years, it is safe to assume that Kaepernick, just as anyone out of work for 2 1⁄2 years, will need some time to get back into the swing of things. Even if he has kept in great shape physically, the physical component of being a professional athlete is just one of many variables that lead to success or failure. Between learning Doug Pederson’s offensive and developing the required chemistry with his new teammates, Kaepernick would likely need, at a minimum, a few weeks if not a month to be game-ready. Conversely, McCown has played in every season since Kaepernick’s last game. Also, and more importantly, Kaepernick was hardly even league average when he played last. Here is a summary of his stats in 2016, his last full season:Completion %: 59.2 (t-29th)Yards per Attempt: 6.8 (t-27th)Passer Rating: 90.7 (19th)PFF Grade: 57.8 (29th)For comparison, here is Josh McCown’s stat line from 2016:Completion %: 54.5 (38th)Yards per Attempt: 6.7 (t-29th)Passer Rating: 72.3 (33rd)PFF Grade: 55.7 (33rd)Now, if you want to argue that Kaepernick is a better quarterback than Josh McCown, I am not going to stop you http://www.eagleslockerroom.com/authentic-carson-wentz-jersey , as it may be true. The thing is, however, neither have been good quarterbacks in recent years. He might not even be interested in joining the EaglesKaepernick publicly backed Eric Reid after the Carolina Panthers safety called Malcolm Jenkins a “sellout” and a “neo-colonialist.” Would he really want to come be Jenkins’ teammate? And even if he did, would the Eagles want to create a locker room dynamic where they’re adding a quarterback who previously endorsed criticism of a current team captain? The Eagles were never going to sign Colin KaepernickIf you want to ignore these key factors, and argue that the team should have signed him, feel free. If you think that the only reason the Eagles won’t give him a chance is related to his National Anthem protesting, have at it. The honest-to-goodness truth, however, is that Kaepernick has not been a quality NFL quarterback for years. He would probably make for a solid backup, if he did not come with a $20 million price tag. McCown was a more affordable veteran option for the team, though, and that’s why they chose him.
