Having won the lottery, the Panthers add Ekblad to a solid stable of forwards that already boasts Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov. Picking second despite the NHLs worst record, the Buffalo Sabres had their pick of a number of top-end forwards and Button ultimately had them taking Kingston Frontenacs centre Sam Bennett. With the top two off the board, a run of Canadian teams commenced with five of the seven clubs selecting within the next seven picks. The Edmonton Oilers stepped up at No. 3 and took German centre Leon Draisaitl. The Prince Albert centre comes with superb vision and offensive punch and deepens an already loaded young forward corps. Edmontons provincial rivals, the Calgary Flames, used the very next pick on Sam Reinhart. The next Canadian team to hit the podium were the Vancouver Canucks at sixth overall. They didnt have to look far for their pick, grabbing B.C.s Jake Virtanen of the Calgary Hitmen. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets picked eighth and ninth overall respectively and each grabbed a winger to boost their forward ranks. The Leafs grabbed a blend of size and skill by selecting Peterborough Petes forward Nick Ritchie. Winnipeg went for pure skill with Danish winger Nikolaj Ehlers, who scored 104 points in just 63 games with the Halifax Mooseheads this past season. And, Pittsburgh teammates bumped into each other to help Detroits Tomas Tatar score a 4-on-4 goal after forward James Neal was called for interference for pushing a stick on the ice away from him. "Its pretty rare," Sidney Crosby said of the penalty called on Neal. "But so is a butt-end, and so is a puck going off our guy three times." With 3:46 left in regulation, Detroits David Legwand was ejected and given a five-minute major for using the butt end of his stick to hit Evgeni Malkin in front of the net. The Penguins failed to take advantage of the extended chance with an extra skater, and it cost them in a mistake-filled game. "We had more than enough opportunities to win that game," Crosby said. Detroit was up 2-0, trailed 3-2 and led 4-3 lead with 7:43 left. Craig Adams pulled Pittsburgh back into a tie two minutes later. "That was the one area of the game that it got away from us," Malkin said. Stempniak redirected a shot with 4:43 left in the second and Malkin made it 2-all soon thereafter. Ten seconds into a 5-on-3 power play, Malkins slap shot through traffic put Pittsburgh ahead 3-2 with 2:02 left in the second.
